Fanny Herself
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd) (May, 2001)
Authors: Edna Ferber, J. Henry, and Lawrence R. Rodgers
Average review score:

An engaging, personal, affirming biography.
The daughter of a Hungarian-born father and Milwaukee-native mother, Edna Ferber spent much of her childhood years in small midwestern towns. Her family, while not observant, always closed their store for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, never missing a Passover seder. Ferber felt that being Jewish was to be subjected to anti-Semitism. In 1917 she wrote Fanny Herself, based largely on the experiences she had while growing up in Appleton, Wisconsin and later in Chicago, Illinois. Her's is a tale of a young Jewish girl trying to become a successful businesswoman in early twentieth century America without denying her Jewish roots or subverting her social conscience. This newly abridged, four cassette, six hour audiobook edition (wonderfully narrated by Suzanne Toren) will introduce a whole new generation of listeners to a remarkable literary talent and an engaging, personal, affirming biography.

A Clear Insight
I read this book several years ago and am glad to see that a copy can be obtained here at Amazon. It offers a reader or if you prefer a reader of Lawrence profound insights into the the theories that were behind the genius of D. H. Lawrence. It's also extremely well written and offers a healthy view of sexuality - A great must read!

Farming the Dust Bowl: A First-Hand Account from Kansas
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (March, 1986)
Authors: Lawrence Svobida and R. Douglas Hurt
Average review score:

Unique
Having searched for a first hand account of what it was like to attempt to farm during the dust bowl I was very pleased to find this work. Svobida provides a year by year account of his attempts to do that and I enjoyed learning from his trials and tribulations. The book is unique, as to this point, it is the only work I've found that gives the details of how farmers attempted to prevail during the dust bowl years. Increased an already high admiration for those who lived in and trhough the dust bowl.

A Field Guide to the Familiar: Learning to Observe the Natural World
Published in Paperback by University Press of New England (April, 1998)
Authors: Gale Lawrence, Adelaide Murphy, and Adelaide Murphy Tyrol
Average review score:

A fine book by a first-rate nature writer . . .
Lawrence, a naturalist and newspaper columnist, knows a great deal about a great many things, and she parades her knowledge graciously and triumphantly in this field guide to familiar wildlife. The book is not an identification manual. Rather it collects short essays on topics ranging from fall wildflowers to shooting stars. All are solidly researched and elegantly written, and throughout run Lawrence's gentle humor and original insights. I recommend this book to nature lovers everywhere!

Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology: Application and Evaluation of Pathogens for Control of Insects and Other Invertebrate Pests
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (June, 2000)
Authors: Lawrence A. Lacey and Harry K. Kaya
Average review score:

ANOTHER CLASSIC IN THE FIELD OF INSECT PATHOLOGY!!!
This is an excellent book, with lots of up-to-date information which will be of great use to those interested in microbial control of insect pests. It serves as a complement to Lacey's "Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology." Unfortunately, the book is ridiculously priced, which will greatly limit its availability. Imagine spending over [price] in Latin America or Africa for ONE book. It won't happen.

The Films of Gloria Swanson
Published in Paperback by Citadel Pr (April, 1988)
Author: Lawrence J. Quirk
Average review score:

One of the finest FILMS OF entries
Fantastic! Hard to believe the author could find so many super-rare photos of these early Gloria Swanson films - a large number of these films are sadly lost forever - and he is obviously a Swanson partisan (Cheers - tired of reading books by jealous writers belittling their subject's accomplishments.) Swanson was famous for saying in SUNSET BLVD - "In my day, we have faces." This book shows over and over how true that statement was.

The Films of Myrna Loy
Published in Paperback by Lyle Stuart (May, 1984)
Author: Lawrence J. Quirk
Average review score:

A lovely book traces the life and career of a legendary lady
This gem was originally published by Citadel Press in 1980 to coincide with Loy's 75th birhday. As the author states in the opening passage '...this diamond anniversary is a fitting time to recapitulate her extraordinairy life and her unique contribution to films.'. It is obvious from this statement that Quirk is an avid admireer of Loy's and that this book should not let her down in any way. The opening chapter is a brief biography charting Loy's childhood in Montana, her early years in Hollywood, her star years at MGM, her UNESCO days and her latter years as a character actress and features many wonderful and candid shots of Myrna dated from 1905 to 1980. Then starting on page 31 is a comprehensive list of all of her film appearances from 1925 onwards featuring cast and crew listings and the author's own essay (not to mention some great black and white stills). All of her classic roles are here, from her days as a chorus girl extra in 'Pretty Ladies' to Alan King's long suffering secratery in 1979's 'Just Tell Me What You Want'. Of course the last years of Loy's life are not included - she made her last screen appearance in the 1981 TV film 'Summer Solstice' and had her autobiography published in 1987. She was honored by the Kennedy Center in 1988 and finally won a much deserved special oscar early in 1991, less than three years before her death in December 1993. This makes a fitting tribute to a wonderful lady who became a great Hollywood star and humanitarian.

Fishing for Crocodiles
Published in Paperback by Literary Associates Press (01 January, 2001)
Author: Peter Lawrence
Average review score:

If you like Huckelbury Finn - this book is for you.
There are a lot of good books that have recently come out of Africa, and this is diffenently one of them. Peter Lawrence writes a coming of age story in Africa that reminds one of the stories of Mark Twain. However, I liked this book better, because it is closer to the age I grew up in - which makes it easier to relate to the charaters.

If you like Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, or Mukiwa then you will also like this book. I would also recommend Fireforce and Survial Course by Chris Cocks.
